Dawkins in Madison

Richard Dawkins is coming to my humble city of Madison, Wisconsin! Sweet. I last met Dawkins in San Francisco one and a half years ago at the Palace of Fine Arts. It was there that I learned that if you don’t know what question to ask a big speaker, don’t wait to get in line – think of it in line! Doesn’t always pan out… but at least you get the chance.

Many people in Madison already know about the Tuesday night talk, but Dawkins is doing a little more than that while he’s here. Here are the events I’ve found relating to his visit:

On Monday night, there will be a discussion, but no appearance.

The God Delusion Book conversation

When: Mon Mar 10, 2008 6pm to Mon Mar 10, 2008 8:30pm CDT

Where: Barnard Buffet Room

Event Description: Discussion of Richard Dawkin’s book “The God Delusion” with faculty, staff and students. Come for dessert, coffee, and good discussion.

Then on Tuesday afternoon, he’ll be at the Chadbourne residential hall in-person.

What Matters to Me and Why: Richard Dawkins

When: Tue Mar 11, 2008 3pm to 5:30pm CDT

Where: Chadbourne Main Lounge

Finally, there’s the Big Event at the Memorial Union Theater:

SOLD OUT!

I was there right on the 4th to pick up two tickets for Ariela and myself. They said that you could only get one ticket per ID – It was really interesting seeing the stories people came up with as to why their friends weren’t there with their IDs! “Oh they’re coming later… etc” Come on, people! Call in an outstanding favor with a lab-mate or other friend and show up with as many IDs as you need tickets, that’s what I did.

Soon enough, as the tickets became available for the public, they were immediately sold out. But you may still be able to find some on Craigslist – or if you’ve got one you want to give up, someone will bake you a pie in return! Wow, what an offer! These tickets are better than gold!

I’ll be going to as many of these events as I can, hopefully I can catch the Monday night conversation amidst making a soup, and possibly interviewing someone for my show. I also sent an interview request to Richard Dawkins in anticipation of his visit. I’ve been trying to get an interview with Richard Dawkins for some time, maybe this time tomorrow I might have an answer! If not Monday, I’ll try and ask on Tuesday. Look for an ecstatic post, one way or another!

For those who couldn’t get a ticket, I’ll bring my mp3 recorder and upload it to the Mindcast Extras feed.

The Atheists, Humanists, and Agnostics at UW-Madison are going to be there, and we’re planning on going to the Nitty Gritty for a late dinner after the talk. If you want to join us, send an email to aha AT rso DOT wisc DOT edu.
